Met Costume Gala - Make me a superhero!

The Metropolitan Costume Institute Gala held on May 6 brought out the heavy hitters in both fashion and entertainment. The theme for the night was "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" but it was more fashion than fantasy.

While most of the dresses that night were gorgeous, many did not reflect the theme at all. However, there were few brave souls who took the risk and did their best interpretation of the superhero fantasy theme, both retro and futuristic. Some of these dresses would not have worked on a normal red carpet but as it was a costume gala, I think they were perfectly fitting.

So my question to you, who had the best superhero(ine) costume?

Blog Announcement - New Header

Hey Everyone,

I designed a new header for Fatal Attraction 2 Fashion today and I'm now trying to put it up. I'm not too familiar with doing this so I'm having a bit of trouble getting the size worked out so bear with me please.

In the meantime, I've put up a new poll where you can tell me what you think of the new header. You can also leave me a comment about it anywhere on the blog.

Thanks very much.

* UPDATE* Everything is working perfectly now!

Get it for way less - Christian Siriano Blouse

Did anyone else catch the fabulous Christian on last week's Ugly Betty episode? The Project Runway diva brought his fierce flavour to the show along with his amazing designs.

Not only the models were outfitted in Siriano creations however, as he also custom designed the outfit Amanda (played by Becki Newton) wore for the episode.

I had to stream this episode online as I missed it when it showed on T.V. When Amanda appeared for the first time, I kept rewinding it to look at that gorgeous blouse she was wearing!

This black, ruffled, puff sleeved beauty is now being auctioned off on the Clothes off our back website where the bid is now at US$550.

I don't think there's a girl on this planet who wouldn't love to own this blouse (there probably is but for exaggeration purposes...). Unfortunately, not all of us can afford it and the bids are only going to get higher.

Luckily, I found a similar, much less expensive blouse online at
Bebe.

It costs US$69 and of course it's not nearly as gorgeous as Christian's but for the price, it doesn't do too badly at all.

Obviously there are a few differences such as the fact that there are no ruffles at the neck and this one is short sleeved as opposed to Christian's long sleeved version. If this a problem, maybe wearing them with long black arm bands might work to complete the look.

Other than that, I think it looks pretty close.

Like it or not? - Jacket Skort

When I got my sewing machine for Christmas last year, I scoured many different websites and online communities for inspiration. Clothing reconstruction was one of the concepts I was introduced to and although I didn't like everything I saw, I was still incredibly amazed at the level of skill and creativity.

Yesterday I stumbled on this reconstructed skort made from two secondhand jackets from fashion designer from the Netherlands named Tineke Greijdanus.

I've seen this baggy pants style on quite a few street fashion blogs. Personally, this one is not for me but what do you think of this creation?

I found this on a website called DesignSpotter which is an online "design magazine dedicated to everything related to young modern contemporary design including: accessoires, books, design-contests, exhibitions, fashion, furniture, hotels, lighting, new materials, residential architecture, interior design and prototypes."

Random Thoughts - Style from a childhood past

It's so much fun to look at photos of myself when I was younger.

I thoroughly enjoyed dressing up (much like now) and being in pictures (not so much). I grew up during the horrible fashion era that was the 90s, so it's hilarious to see the kinds of things I thought were cool back then.

I remember one of my favourite things to do was wear my hair in cornrows and put a ton of beads on the end. I would only be able to do this during the summer vacation as this style was not allowed during school time. I waited patiently for this time to arrive and when it did, I worked the hell out of those beads!

I know many mothers like their children to be as fashionable as possible but my mother let me wear what I wanted. That probably contributed to my constant inexplicable happiness and carefree demeanour in photographs. This unadulterated innocence only lasts for so long and being trendy shouldn't be something a child has to worry about.

Below are some of the "stylish" looks I sported as a kid.

The Activewear Ensemble
I don't mean to brag, but I did a masterful job of mixing clashing colours and prints here. Ah, well at least they both have boats on them. That has to count for something.

The Cocktail Dress
I felt like a Disney Princess in this one with the large puff sleeves. Look at those high ruffle socks!

The Summery Frock
Note the clashing orange, dark green and pink combination with matching socks and hair beads.

Classic jeans and tee
Check out the rips in the front of these hot baggy, faded jeans and the pom poms down the side.

As awful as some of these outfits were however, there is a lot that can be learnt from my younger self. Children have a sense of adventure and a fearlessness that many adults can only long for. That free spirited attitude is what I aim to recapture whenever I get dressed.

I don't wish to look like a fashion victim but I often throw on whatever I think looks good in the morning and, if need be, assess my outfits after I get dressed but never before.

I think spending too much time planning outfits can leave you looking a little too contrived and uninspired and I don't think that's not how any true lover of fashion wishes to look.

Ebay Spring Trend - Sheer cover

Show some skin! Sheer fabrics are another big trend this spring and were seen on many runways including (from left to right) Chanel, Jil Sander, Derek Lam and Fendi.

photos courtesy style.com

While it may seem like an intimidating look to adopt for some, the sheer trend is all about being subtly seductive but still keeping it classy. Choose an item that will hint at your best features such as a blouse with sheer sleeves to bring the focus to your arms or a skirt with a sheer hem to show off your great legs. Be careful not to reveal too much or your outfit may leave you looking like less of a fashionista and more like a lady of the night.

You can use sheer fabrics as a cover up over another garment, for example, wear a sheer patterned dress or skirt over a plain one for delicate but alluring look.

Tap into this trend with the items I found below.
