Would you rock this? - Rihanna

Homegirl Rihanna at the 2008 Kid's Choice Awards on Saturday in an H&M bustier and Stella McCartney jeans.

I'm not so much a fan of her singing but she usually looks well put together. I'm not so sure about this look however. She's doing a few things that, in reality, shouldn't work. The bustier is ok but I am not really feeling those pants. They don't seem to fit very well, being so loose at the top and then tapered at the bottom. And the nails...the green nails. I know there are many people who believe Rihanna is a fashion angel who can do no wrong but the whole look is bordering on tacky in my opinion. What do you think?

Still, her confidence is enough to make you think it's the greatest outfit ever made. I gotta admire that.

Random Thoughts - Fashion through the years

I found this really cool video a while back and being as absent minded as I am, I forgot to bookmark it. Now many unsuccessful searches later, through the power of Youtube, I have been reunited with it. It's a great theatre production on how fashion has changed throughout the years. It was taken from a 1986 documentary but this excerpt is only like four minutes.

I am fascinated with clothing from decades past, my favourites being the 20s till the 40s. I love the independence and confidence the women had during these times, despite all they had going against them. They defined the clothing they wore, not the other way around.

The only downside to this video is that it's in French, so I really have no idea what they're saying but that doesn't really take away from it. If anyone can speak French, I would appreciate it if you can help me out if they've said anything interesting.

Enjoy!

Keeping it short n' sweet!

Is it still cold where you live? Even if it is but you're ready to brave it, you can break out of the winter mode by donning a cute, feminine mini. I found some really cute dresses and skirts with daring hemlines, adorable prints and girly details. And if the warm colours aren't enough to break you out of an icy mood, I don't know if there's much hope.

I know this look isn't for everyone. I prefer to see other people wearing minis than wearing them myself, but if you can pull this look off, then by all means do so.

Make the most of the weather (and those legs) in these sweet picks below!

Celebrity Style for less - Eva Longoria

Whether it be love, hate or indifference you feel towards Eva Longoria, you have to admit that she is always gorgeous in anything she wears. Sure she may not be the most adventurous fashionista in Hollywood, but I can't say I've ever really seen her look terrible.

The least desperate housewife (on the show anyway) was seen in a purple strapless dress and gold heels leaving her new restaurant Beso on March 26. She confidently pairs the two complementary colours together for a fun, youthful look and tops it off with a neutral clutch purse.

Earn your (nautical) stripes!

Although ideal, you don't need to go sailing on a yacht to wear this look. These stripes have been blowing up in stores all over this season and as classic and sophisticated is always in style, I doubt they will ever fully go away.

As is the case with any trend, don't go overboard with this style (no pun intended). One striped item of clothing at a time will make you look more chic, less overzealous sailor girl. Knowing what suits you is essential; clothing with stripes, in any direction, may not suit everyone.

Here are a few picks you may be interested in.

Sweet Spring Scarves

Ahh, Spring is in the air. Not in my air, just yours. We only have summer in Barbados so I have no idea what it's like, but I digress.

You see the signs of spring all around. A blossoming flower in a garden, a bird chirping in the tree, and now you can get it around your neck. Lulu's Fashion Lounge has some of the prettiest cotton scarves in stock. Bold patterns in gorgeous colours will surely brighten up any outfit and lift any sour mood and with prices of US$13 and US$16, you can't help but smile.

What I want right now - Owl Pendant

For the last few weeks I've been stumbling across owl pendants on various online stores. While they've been around for a long time, it's only now that I've become rather infatuated with the little creatures and now they're high on my list of things to get. In Barbados, we don't have many things like this here so when I find stuff like this online, I have to get them!

With their huge round eyes and upside-down pineapple-shaped bodies, I think they're just the cutest things you can wear around your neck. My favourite is the articulated kind (like the one below), because really, if you're going to wear an animal around your neck, why not let it move around a bit?

Is there anything that you want right now?

Random Thoughts - Celebrity Fashion Lines

Nicole Richie, Hilary Duff, Katie Holmes, Lauren Conrad, Paris Hilton. These are only a few in the many names on the Celebrity Fashion Line list, surely with more to come. It seems to be the new fad in Hollywood along with sex tapes (not really that new) and adopting children from foreign countries.

I keep asking myself however, what makes them qualified to design clothing? How much of the design process are they really involved in? The style that they are praised for; is their personal style or is it simply the work of a talented stylist?

There are the select few that seem to be serious about what they are doing such as Gwen Stefani and more recently, Nicky Hilton. However, in my opinion, most seem to want to do it simply because they can. There are many truly talented fashion designers in the world that unfortunately will never get the chance to experience it because they do not have the money and connections to do so. These are the people who live and breathe fashion every day and who should be the ones gracing the runways with their awe inspiring designs.

The more of these celeb lines that come out, the less the fashion industry will be taken seriously. Fashion will no longer be viewed as an art but simply as another means for the already rich and famous to get more rich and famous. I, for one, would not like to see this happen to one of the most expressive art forms in history.

You've read my thoughts on this matter. Do you agree/disagree?

Fatal Attraction 2 - Statement Jewelry

Oh, how I love statement jewelry! I love it, I love it, I...okay, you get the point. I was born in the late 80s, so technically I cannot be called a child of the 80s since I didn't experience very much of it. The one thing that seemed to have rubbed off on me while I was there, however, is the love of big, bold jewelry. Anyone else out there like me?

I recently purchased this pair of white and gold flower earrings from a garage sale for $2.

I asked my mother, who would remember the 80s vividly, what she thought and she said "they are a bit old fashioned." Maybe they are, but I think they're lovely. Or maybe I was blinded by the beauty of a total bargain. In any case, that's the nature of fashion; many things that seem to be dead and gone make a trendy appearance a few decades later.

You can wear the absolute simplest outfit and pair it with a cocktail ring or a big, sexy earrings and it makes everything a whole lot more interesting. Trust me, statement jewelry can be one of the best conversation starters. With anyone who is willing to listen of course.

Incorporate some bold jewelry into your collection with the pieces below.
