Like it or not? - Urban Outfitters Laser Cutout Tees

One disturbing trend that seems to be springing up in Barbados is cheap, brightly-coloured shirts with random, horizontal rips worn usually with just a bra (in a different colour from the shirt) underneath. Most girls just look like awfully trashy in them, especially those with fuller figures who insist on wearing clothes that don't suit their bodies.

Anyway, I immediately thought of those horrible shirts when I saw these two from Urban Outfitters but surprisingly I don't despise these as much. Probably because the shirts look of a better quality, they're in more subdued colours and the cutouts actually form a shape . I prefer the top one because the shirt seems to look better fitted and the spider web design looks cool. However, if you have a little extra somethin' on your back and sides, chances are this type of shirt won't do a good job of flattering those areas so I suggest you steer clear.

I'm still on the fence about them though. What do you think? Cool cutouts or tacky tees?

  1. I actually like the idea of it! Might be pretty cooling to wear them! But I have a really ugly birthmark that I really won't want to show :(

  3. You know how I'm a sucker for anything backless, right? Well, by the same token, I kinda love this look!!

  4. I think they're pretty cool! A little tacky, sure...but I suppose that's the fun in them.

  5. Hi Danz-hope you are well, my dear friend!! I really like the 2nd one, I would think the key is to wear it slightly loose with denim. I agree a tight fit or lumps and bumps in the wrong places sends out a trashy look! Have a great week!!

  6. i dont know how i feel about these!? it might grow on me.....

  7. like the spider shape, but don't like the waistband showing!

  8. first impression is tacky, but I can think of many a fashion blogger that could "make it work" in the words of Tim Gunn.

  9. I don't really like this tops..
the second one can look cool but you have to be very careful...

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm not a big fan of them, but, even though I wouldn't wear the tess, they are interesting.
I definitely agree with you about the girls who have "a little extra something" and wear those kinds of tops...it's extremely unsightly when someone has loose skin and fatty bits bulging out of holes in their top...
I think I like the spiderweb better than the second tee, though. I guess it all depends on waht the cutout is.

  11. it might be cool if someone has tattoos on their back??

yes, the bright colors with cut outs and bra showing... does sound garish.

i think i'm just gonna stick with the shoulder cut-outs for now :)

  12. Hey, sweetie pie.

I just love your posts. Again, you have endeavored to educate with much success. I positively love the comment about wearing clothing that's appropriate for the body. This is so important if one is not to be deemed a fashion victim.

Sometimes when I see those cutout tops on certain women it makes me contemplate starting a website entitled "Why You Got THAT on?

  13. Hey sweetie, I forgot something too.

I used to show my work in galleries all around the state of Michigan. I sold quite a few pieces, in fact, that was how I used to make my summer money. Time and life kind of got in the way, but I believe God is bringing me full circle now.

Thanks for the wonderful comment and I love you.

    Have a great day, yourself.

    MUAH!

  14. Tacky tees, definitely...
Anyways, I don't know...Maybe it's because they are not my style at all...but anyways I can't think of a good way of wearing them...

Your blog is sooooo cool, as always, dear Danz...I love visiting you.

  18. I like the cutouts, it's the fake LV logo graphic that's kind of bothering me.

  19. I'm really not so keen on those UO tees, the skull one is the worst though! By the way I tagged you for an award!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't know if i would actually buy it. But it certainly is special.

Thank you dear for your great comments!!!

  22. I agree with style du monde. It interesting but I don't know if it's me. Maybe for my rock and punk day???

    ReplyDelete
  23. they could look cool, but i'd have to see them on. the idea is really great though!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Danz, lovely how are you? I'm going to agree with a previous commenter, I think the terrible faux-LV print grosses me out a bit - but the idea of lazer-cuts are pretty awesome. I can't really think of anything I would want specifically, but I have a feeling it will gain a bit of popularity.

What is going on with you, bella!? Those Zara jeans are a bit annoying, they totally just kinda ride around on my no-butt and sag like crazy, but I guess I'll just deal, hahaha.

    I hope you're having a good week!
    Speak soon, babe! xoxo

  28. yeah we can def trade...and i like this shirt i might get it and just layer..cuteeee..

    ReplyDelete
  29. i really like them. and they could easy be worn with a spaghetti strap tank underneath for a nice contrast if you don't feel risky and showing your entire back.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i think they're kind of cool, but i don't know if they'll survive the washing machine?? i prefer the top one as well. link me back if possible? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like the first one a lot! I'm glad to say I've been spared seeing that sight around town.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I tried to look at them again and again but I really don't like them...!

    ReplyDelete
  33. i don't fancy it actually. but i think it would be passable if something is worn underneath it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't like it! It's too much 80's!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. let's hope that this doesn't go global, because it's gunna be ugly!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would not buy it, but cant wait for any of you girls to wear this look!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I quite like them actually, I think some girls would look absolutely fantastic in them!!! Then again, it's true some would look totally trashy, but I guess it depends how you wear it!

    ReplyDelete
  38. mmm no. i don't like this look.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Love to trade links! I'll add you pronto! And I'm not liking these laser cutouts. They were popular where I live for awhile because this girl would take regular tops/dresses and make cutouts into patterns. But it sure would add some nice ventilation on hot days!

    ReplyDelete
  40. The spider one looks good... but the second one looks almost a bit scary! I never seen these b4. Thanks for posting them up!

And thanks so much for the tag :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. wow, I've never seen tees like this before, and I'm not so into them either. But it's a new look...

    ReplyDelete
  42. hmmm...i find these are kind of tacky. They would look great on certain people, just like anything, but i wouldn't wear it.
Wearing a bra underneath would look wrtong and i feel so naked without one :S
Thanks for posting, i had never seen such a thing. or even heard of laser cutting.

    ReplyDelete
  43. maybe they would work as layering pieces? Over a neon tank perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love the colour, but the cutouts may be a bit challenge for me! I guess I will be worried about anyone see me through, then it may be hooked with something else.... Ummmmm, I am not 100% sure now... Maybe if the cutouts are smaller and fewer can be better? xxxxxxx

    ReplyDelete
  45. Cool-looking tops for the right girl!

    ReplyDelete
  46. i'd consider the cut-out one of the skeleton if it didn't also have the pattern. while i think it's a bit much, i appreciate the originality.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think they're dangerously close to the tack but if you're young and thin, why not?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ia actually like, but depending in with what you combine it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Actually I'm not feeling these shirts, maybe the spider shape without seeing the waist of the bottom...
    Hmmmm... must be worn carefuly.

Thank you darling for your sweet words.

    Love
    xoxo

  50. hmmm.. not for me (for now? not sure if forever) :):)

    ReplyDelete
  51. lol, i really like the cut-outs, but not the patterns on the tees.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I am drawn to these, and would definitely rock one on J'ouvert.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i'm not really sure how i feel about them but the spider web one is growing on me a bit

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hey D it's just CC again! I did the tag today - thanks again for nominating me :)
Also - our gal Laurel is now in 3rd place - woohoo!!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. why thank you!!!!

you crack me up! i see you are friends with my friend laurel (we both live in the same town)!

    Crazy good fun!

    p.s. your blog is fantastic-o!

    ReplyDelete
  56. i love the first one. . but i do agree that it's imperative to only wear what suits your body

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ewwwwwwwwwwwww
    I hate this
I would never wear this with a contrasting bra, and I couldn't walk around just bra-less...
Ihe idea is kind of cool in theory but just doesn't work.
I'd totally tear up the thinner fabric areas by mistake, too, in like 3 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  58. very cool but i would probably never wear them. i would pay to see someone walk past me wearing one of those.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I actually have the Urban tee! The exact color and everything! It looks great over a swimsuit! Not sure if I would wear it with anything else though!

    xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  60. hmmm...I dont know..The spider web one looks cool but the bottom one looks too tacky. It's a fine line..

    ReplyDelete
  61. i LOVE THIS. it's so so funky and different.

  62. I think it depends how you wear them-
with a solid coloured shirt underneath it might not look so bad, but I would never wear it with skin showing it would look trashy

    ReplyDelete
  63. shamed as I am to admit it, i LIKE them! hehehe.be fun to play dress up in them perhaps?

  64. Tacky.
at first i was like omg backless. coz im a sucker for anything backless but i dont know its a little "i got beaten up and my shirt ripped" kind of thing plus it would look hideous if youre anything but super skinny.

    Great post though!
    Cheers,
