Reviving the Doctor

Dr. Martens are the kind of shoe you either love or you hate. The tough, heavy-duty aesthetic is far from beautiful or glamourous but they can add an unexpectedly cool and sometimes, even sexy attitude to an outfit.

The first Doc Martens came out on April 1, 1960 in the U.K and were at first worn mostly by postmen and factory workers. During the late 60s and 70s, they also became the footwear of choice for various rebellious youth subcultures such as punks and skinheads. The boots were also hugely popular with the grunge kids of the 90s.

Unfortunately, as time went on, people began to lose interest in the brand and sales took a turn for the worst with the company eventually being forced to cease all production in the U.K in 2003.

More recently, however, things have been looking up for Dr. Martens as fashionable eyes are once again taking notice of the boots. They have been seen everywhere; on the runway, in magazines, and on the feet of many stylish girls and guys around the world.

This year, Dr. Martens is also giving people around the world the chance to showcase their artistic talents by creating a design for their next boots.

You are given the choice of either the 8-hole or the 14-hole boots, as seen above, and the freedom to decorate them as you wish.

You can upload an original design onto the site or there are a bunch of tools at your disposal such as pens and spray paint, so you can create your entries online. There are also really cool effects you can add, such as lighter burns, correction fluid and masking tape to give the design a distressed finish.

At the end of it, two winners are chosen; one of which is decided by the public and the other is chosen by industry professionals. The winning designs will be manufactured by Dr. Martens and sold in shops worldwide.

Below are the designs of the two previous winners: Jeremy Asher Lynch and Aprille Soons Palmer, respectively.

Even if you're not a Dr. Martens enthusiast, you'll still have a lot of fun coming up with ideas and playing around with the tools. You never know, it may be your entry chosen to be made and sold to millions of people everywhere!

Ethereal glory

I have a real weakness for all things soft and pretty and I am totally enamoured with this really lovely editorial called "Where the crickets sing" photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth for Lula Magazine #2.

I love everything about these shots...the soft glow of light, the curly hair, the flowers, the pearls, the little bunny (isn't it just adorable?). These elements combined make these shots so delicate, feminine and beautiful.

I was so inspired, in fact, that I decided to experiment with my camera and see if I could possibly get anything remotely decent out of it and I was pleasantly surprised.

It was raining yesterday so I took advantage of the beautiful window light in one of the rooms in my house and took some shots there. My sister was my camera slave for the day, and while it took quite some time to get it right, I think the end result is quite interesting.

I wore a pink embroidered top and this amazing, full, tiered skirt I got from a sale for BDS$5.

Also, if you're interested, below are some really pretty, feminine and affordable dresses that I found.

Cool Vintage Finds - Woven dreams

It's an image I grew up seeing: men and women sitting by the side of the road selling their crafts to anyone who would buy, in order to make enough money to feed their families. These people were obviously not rich but they possessed a great wealth of talent and knowledge when it came to their particular trades.

One of the
trades popular here in Barbados and other developing countries is weaving. This is the process of interlacing two distinct sets of thread, yarn or thin strips of any flexible material, to form a fabric.

There are various types of weave including plain weave, knitting, basket weave, twill, satin weave and jacquard weave which are used to make products such as fabric, baskets, hats and bags.

Define and Enhance

Want to create or emphasize a sexy womanly silhouette? Then a corset-style garment is definitely the way to go!

Historically, a corset is an article of clothing worn mostly by women who desired to emphasize a slim hourglass figure by physically reducing the waist.

The appearance of a corseted body was thought to be visually pleasing but there were also serious health risks as a result of prolonged or incorrect wear, such as difficulty breathing and organ deformation.

Although some women still practice wearing authentic corsets, most just prefer to wear clothing that mimics the visual effects they create.

Corset-style tops and dresses were recently seen on Charlize Theron at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards on June 1, Victoria Beckham while promoting her dVB line on May 15 and Jada Pinkett Smith at the premiere of Kit Kittredge in New York on June 19.

Sarah Jessica Parker also wore a feathered corset in the Sex and the City Movie, Rihanna wore a dress with a corset-like bodice to the third annual “Cartier Love Day” Lighting Ceremony on June 19 and Heidi Klum wore a leather corset top at the opening of Trump International Hotel in Dubai on June 24.

You too can shape up with the corset-style clothing options below.

Tagged - Seven Songs for Spring

I was tagged by Sharon Rose and Nay'chelle to list the seven songs I'm really feeling right now.

The rules:
“List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.”

Ok, so here are my song choices for Spring/Summer:

Do It by Nelly Furtado (2008)
I miss the old Nelly from her "I'm like a Bird" days and I'm starting to tire of Timbaland's generic pop beats, but I really like this song. It's a cool, fun song and Nelly's voice sounds really good here .

I Know by Jay-Z ft. Pharrell (2008)
Great hip-hop song, the Neptunes really did an excellent job on the production. I love the song and I also really love the video starring Ms. Zoe Kravitz.

Inside and Out by Feist (2005)
Fantastic remake of the original Bee Gees 1979 hit 'Love you inside and out'. Feist has smooth and beautiful vocals that suits this song perfectly.

Wow by Kylie Minogue (2008)
I've been a fan of Kylie Minogue's music since her album 'Fever' in 2001 and this song is no different. Her songs always make me want to get up and dance (or sit and sing really loudly)!

American Boy by Estelle ft. Kanye West (2008)
Fabulously funky song to sing and dance along to. Estelle is a fantastic singer and Kanye is as cool as ever on this track.

Les Fleurs by 4Hero featuring Carina Andersson (2001)
I first heard this song on a Bailey's commercial called “Zero Gravity Bar” back in 2004 and I just couldn't get it out of my head. It was originally done by Minnie Riperton in 1971 and 4Hero did the cover in 2001. This is a really beautiful and uplifting song, perfect for any season!

Hide Away by Tessanne Chin (?)
This is one of the best reggae/rock fusions I've ever heard and the singer's voice is so beautiful and powerful!

I'm now going to tag Be Stylin', I <333>, The Ongoing Project, The Wandering Alchemist, Searching the Inner Me..., Closet Bug, Meet the Freak.

Obviously there are no obligations to do this tag if you've done it before or you just don't want to :)

Fashion Inspiration - Brilliant Accents

I love bright colour and and am always inspired by it, but you don't have to be covered from head to toe in it to make a statement. One of my current trend obsessions is the combination of splashes of lively, bright colours with neutral colours.

For example, check out these neon accented looks from the S/S08 runways of Costume National, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui and Jil Sander.

photos courtesy style.com

On the streets, intense colour highlights on clothing and accessories help these girls stand out from the crowd. The mostly muted colours of their outfits help to balance out the blindingly bright colours for a great mix of playfulness and sophistication.

Each of these fabulous ladies below incorprates this look to suit their personal style. Laia rocks out her neon green miniskirt (
Geometric Sleep), Silje looks lovely in her turquoise blue jacket (Silje's Fashion), The Seeker brightens up with vivid red shoes (Searching the Inner Me) and Nourahshammari's yellow clutch adds a pop of colour to her simple and chic casual outfit (Nourahshammari's Chic Blog).

Some of you might remember, I even tried this look myself a little while ago with a dark patterned wrap blouse over a bright yellow dress and black accessories.

If small doses of bright colour is what you're looking for, check out these items below.

Patching things up with style

I'll admit it, when I hear the word 'patchwork' used in relation to clothing, the very first thing that comes to my mind is the quintessential country bumpkin in a modest dress made out of old pieces of cloth in many different colours and prints.

The next image I usually think of is the funky patchwork from the 70s. As the model in the photo shows us, wearing this look from top to bottom wasn't something out of the ordinary or intimidating to the eclectic and fashionably daring men and women of the time.

However, my mind is slowly beginning to see more possibilities with this style with the help of some fun and stylish pieces I've been noticing recently.

While browing the Spring and Fall 2008 collections, I realized that there was tons of patchwork on the runways including Dolce & Gabbana, Kenzo, Moschino Cheap and Chic and Matthew Williamson where the look appeared on both clothing and accessories.

Sale Alert - Dorothy Perkins

Dorothy Perkins, the British women's clothing retailer, is currently having a Summer Sale with up to 50% off selected items. Prices have been lowered on a limited number of dresses, skirts, shirts, bags, shoes and more. Maternity, Tall and Petite clothing are also available at reduced prices.

Below are a few of the items currently on sale.

Capacious clutches

Does bigger really mean better? Not necessarily, but in this case, bigger is definitely a lot cooler. As we approach summer, oversized clutches are still a hot commodity for the season!

With the appeal of their smaller counterparts combined with a fashion-forward edge, versatility and extra space to hold more items, it's no wonder fashionistas can't get enough of them.

Ashley Olsen shows us one way to wear the trend with a tan Calvin Klein number at the premiere of the Sex and the City movie in May.

Red Dress Days

Valentino once said, “Women usually prefer to wear black at events because it makes them feel safe, however, if there’s one woman wearing red, she will inevitably be the eye-catcher of the evening. It’s as though the room is suddenly illuminated- simply perfect for a grand-entrance”.(Source)

The designer would know as he has been an expert at creating beautiful and iconic red dresses for over 25 years and even has his own trademark red known as rosso Valentino.

The reason why some women may be intimidated by the idea of wearing red is because the color is so bold and conveys many meanings. Red is frequently associated with guilt, sin, love, anger, passion, lust and love which are all very strong emotions.

As attention grabbing as the color is, red doesn't only work on ultra sexy, glamorous dresses as it can be just as effective on sweet, girlie dresses.

Red dresses have also been a huge part of cinema with confident, sassy female characters donning the color in a variety of silhouettes.

Below are Audrey Hepburn as Jo Stockton in Funny Face (1957), Kelly Le Brock as Charlotte in The Woman in Red (1984) and Nicole Kidman as Satine in Moulin Rouge! (2001).

These confident ladies on the street show their individual ways of wearing red dresses, each dress and how it is styled communicating something different and unique about its wearer.

Blog Announcement: 100 posts today!

Hey everyone!

Wow, 100 posts, has it really been that many? Time has gone by so quickly! In honour of this milestone, I'm giving out a virtual slice of cake to everyone! Enjoy!

A little insight into how Fatal Attraction 2 Fashion got started:

I had been posting my budget-conscious findings on Fabsugar for a while when I thought to myself one night, "Why don't I just start a real blog?"

So, on a whim, I created Fatal Attraction 2 Fashion with no idea of what to do nor expectations, but I knew I had a lot to share and I was going to do it as well as I could.

I've learned so much in just a little over three months and I've enjoyed sharing it with all you wonderful readers. This has truly been an amazing experience, thank you so much for helping make this blog what it has become thus far! :D

Also, for your viewing pleasure, here are beautiful photos of Coco Rocha for Neiman Marcus June 2008. Check out the Hello Kitty watches in the third photo!

Cool Vintage Finds - Order of the Elephant

Don't you just love it when you get style inspiration from other bloggers? I've been getting quite a lot lately and this post from the very lovely Sharon Rose (thank you dahling!) about sea life prints is the most recent. Now it wasn't exactly direct inspiration, as today's post has nothing to do with the sea, but it did get me thinking about what other rare and unusual motifs are out there.

When I'm on ebay, I tend look at and save a lot more items that I can ever possibly purchase and then forget about them. I went on the site yesterday and saw that I had saved an elephant print dress because I thought it looked interesting and unusual at the time. So I thought it would be cool to make the elephant motif the theme for today's 'Cool Vintage Finds'.

Not surprisingly, this motif was mostly prevalent during the 60s and 70s when hippies were fascinated with other cultures, largely those from eastern Asia where the elephant is a sacred symbol in many of those countries.

Get on the
hippie trail with these elephant motif items below.

What I want right now - Striped Blazer

Ok, so here's the deal...I love blazers...and I love stripes. Put them together and I'm in total outerwear heaven. I prefer big, bold stripes that you can you can spot from a mile away but I can also appreciate the chic simplicity of subtle stripes.

I've had a thing for striped blazers for a long time but I hadn't fed my lust in a while when I stumbled on Captured Lives' blog and saw a photo of her wearing this wonderful vintage one.

That pretty much instantly reignited my desire and now I really want one again. So off I went a huntin' for striped blazers available online and I found a few of them ranging in price from under US$20 to a little over US$100.

I probably still won't be getting one any time soon but sharing with you helps me feel a tad better. Just a tad...

I'd like a little quirk on my jewelry, please

I really love cute, whimsical jewelry and its ability to add a lot of interest and character to an outfit.

I have quite a few quirky pieces in my collection such as a poodle brooch, a 'birds-sitting-on-a-branch' brooch (I love brooches!) and a pendant made out of little plastic feet (this is actually cute)!

While looking for the items for the Zoe Kravitz style post below, I stopped by the Lulu*s Fashion Lounge website and found they have some really adorable, affordable jewelry in stock.

Below are a few that caught my eye.

Celebrity Style for Less - Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz isn't really a celebrity in the true sense of the word as yet. She's known mostly as the daughter of Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz, and also for her unique sense of style.

She was seen
leaving the Rose Bar at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City on June 10 in a cute and slightly quirky outfit. She was wearing a white tank top, a full denim skirt, pointed toe flats, a long strap purse and an eclectic mix of jewelry.

A bit more Polyvore and other stuff

Haha, I really didn't know what to name this post but at least it's straightforward. I hope you all don't mind but this one isn't totally about fashion.

I just wanted to share some more of the stuff I've been doing on Polyvore with you lovely people. For the most part, I've been creating slightly more "artsy" sets, some of which are fashion related.

I've made a lot since the last ones I showed you, but here are a few.

Consumed

Tribute to YSL

Droplets

"Come along, dear..."

Summer Lovin'

"Where am I?"

Just another day

Dark Angel

The Advocate

Sorry about the extra white space around some of them, that's just how they were imported.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to encourage you to take a little time to vote for a fellow fashion blogger, the very fabulous Laurel Stovall of It's Her Factory.

She's competing for the top spot in the online V Magazine Supreme Management Model Search for 2008.

Fashion Inspiration - Fun Fab Fringe

The fringe has sprung up as a major trend for spring and summer and it's showing no signs of slowing down.

The decorative trim was seen a great deal in various S/S08 collections such as Gareth Pugh, Maurizio Pecararo, D&G and Zac Posen.

photos courtesy style.com

This is not a new style, however, as the fringe has been around for a very long time. It has been used during various eras and in many cultures to achieve different aesthetics on clothing .

I've observed that during two eras in particular, the 1920s and the 1970s when the fringe was popular, it seemed to be a symbol of independence. During the 20s, rebellious flappers often wore fringed dresses and in the 70s, the younger defiant generation also wore fringe trimmed clothing. Perhaps it was the loose movement of the fringe that was symbolic of freedom and breaking away from the norms of society.

Below are examples of the different ways the fringe was used. There was the military fringe, the Native American fringe, the flapper fringe, the 70s boho fringe, the Victorian fringe and the cowboy fringe.

The fringe has also been seen on a number of stylish girls around the blogosphere recently.

A few include:

Jennine in her lovely DIY fringe tank (The Coveted), Susie Bubble in her funky fringed pink tights (Style Bubble), Rumi in her Western fringed jacket (Fashion Toast), Nonno in her black fringed ankle boots (Nonno's Chic Blog), Underthestares in her long fringed scarf (Underthestares' Chic Blog) and She's Dressing Up with her cute fringed purse (She's Dressing Up).

I've found some cool, fun fringed items that you might like.

Tagged x 2

Quite a while ago, two wonderful ladies Times of Glory and Paris in Luella Land, both gave me this particular tag and I'm only now doing it. Yes, I know, I'm hanging my head in shame.

Rules
–Post rules at beginning of the post
–Answer all the questions
–Tag 6 people & go to their blog & leave a comment to inform them that they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

1) What were you doing 10 years ago?

Well 10 years ago, I was 10 years old so I guess I was just being a happy child whose only cares included learning the multiplication tables and getting a Barbie for my birthday.

2) What are 5 things on your to-do list today?

i) Clean around the house
ii) Wash my hair
iii) Research for the next blog post
iv) Watch the Golden Girls on youtube
v) Work on some applications for a summer job

3) Snacks you enjoy

Ice cream, chocolate, chips (quite possibly all flavours), cheesecake (yummmm!) and lots more. The title of this question really should be 'Snacks you enjoy...a little too much.'

4) Places you have lived

Let's see...um...Barbados... and...no, that's it. I'm hoping that will change some time in the near future though.

5) Things you would do if you were a billionaire

i) I've never really thought about being a billionaire but I think one of the first things I would do is buy my mother a house, she deserves it.

ii) I'd like to travel the world (although that might be a problem if I go by plane, I'd probably be hyperventilating the whole way!)

iii) At the risk of sounding like a beauty pageant contestant, I'd also donate some of my fortune to charities and also provide funding for less fortunate kids to pursue their dreams. Oh, and promote World Peace.

iv) I'd also open a clothing store or start a magazine or fashion line. Being a billionaire would probably make those jobs...a little easier.

6) People you want to know more about

Anyone I find interesting.

I'm now passing this tagging honour on to:

Strap 'em on

I'd like you all to meet my newest shoe style crush: the multiple strap shoe.

I've been seeing this style for quite a while now on various fashion websites and blogs and my love for them is only growing stronger.

Multiple straps come on all sorts of shoes so there's bound to be a pair to suit your style whether it be classic, sweet, sexy or funky.
The style is feminine with just the right amount of cute so, depending on the shoe of course, they can be appropriate for both work and play.

My most recent sightings of this style were on these three stylish girls on Chictopia.

What I'm Wearing - Lanvin Inspired

You all may have gathered by now that I loved Lanvin's Spring/Summer 2008 collection. I loved it so much in fact, that when I found out my godmother was getting married, I knew I had to get a dress similar to those in the collection.

I chose this one below in particular for my inspiration because I liked the one shoulder aspect and also because ruffles make me happy!

I had the dress made by a lady who makes my mother's clothes and this is the end result below which I wore to the wedding today.

I changed the design to suit my body which as you can see is much curvier than the model's, and I wore it with a thin black belt and black peep toe heels. The dress fits my body perfectly and the great thing about it is that it only cost BDS$45 (approx. US$22) to make! I absolutely love it!

Like it or not? - F21 Ombre Skirt

I'm not the biggest fan of the ombre trend but I think it can look nice when the transition from one colour to another is subtle.

That's why I kind of shuddered when I saw this skirt from Forever21. It looks as though they began to dye it black and then realized they didn't have as much fabric as they thought so they just threw the pink on at the end. I actually have to squint a little to look at it properly but maybe that's the effect they were going for.

It's a little too much for me but what do you think?

Get it for way less - SS08 Lanvin Dress

Nothing can compare to a real Lanvin, but many of us would have to pawn our families and other possessions to get our hands on one of those beautiful, billowy dresses from their Spring/ Summer 2008 collection.

Bebe, who seems to be to clothing what Steve Madden and Bakers are to shoes, has a very similar, less expensive version available online.

It has the same features as the original Lanvin; strapless neckline, pleated, billowy body, bright colour and a ruffled, asymmetrical hem. The only difference in design is the fact that the Bebe dress is belted beneath the bodice.

Indie Designer Spotlight - PrettyRaccoon Clothing

I'm always on the lookout for interesting and affordable clothing to feature, so when I came across PrettyRaccoon Clothing, I knew I had to share it with everyone.

The Toronto-based independent label was started in January 2005 as a part time hobby that eventually grew into a full time enterprise that sells one-of-a-kind clothing all around the world.

PrettyRaccoon Clothing specializes in screen printed handmade and American Apparel clothing. Highly-detailed, random images such as chandeliers, bicycles, anchors, birds among many others are silk screened onto clothing and accessories for men, women and babies.

The designer behind the line, Andrea Winkler, says that her designs are "inspired by nature and retro prints" and "the style can be described as simple, bold and graphic."

PrettyRaccoon Clothing prices range from US$19 to US$52.

Below are a few of the cool items from PrettyRaccoon Clothing.

Give me the cold shoulder!

While doing my regular website browsing on Saturday, I came across this photo of Mary-Kate Olsen dressed in a white kimono style dress with cut out shoulder detail.

I instantly remembered a photo I recently saw in one of my old InStyle magazines of Charlize Theron dressed in a lovely Fall 2006 Bottega Veneta dress.

Charlize made a small but dramatic alteration to the runway look by pulling the fabric forward to show off her shoulders. This flirtatious look is allows you to flash a little skin in a sophisticated manner.

Also, a more recent sighting of this exposed shoulder style was seen on the always fabulous Rumi of Fashion Toast. The cut out shoulder detail of the dress adds a lot of interest to an otherwise simple look.

You too can get the cold shoulder with these lovely blouses and dresses below.

On an unrelated note, many of you may have heard the sad news about the passing of legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent. He was truly a great designer and his immense contribution to the world of fashion will always be remembered.
